Subject	Question about rear steering?

Message	I'm trying to put 17x10 45mm offset wide rims on the rear without using spacers. The tie-rods at rear have about a half inch nipple on them. They are hitting the lip of the rims barely on sharp turns. My question is if I shave them down (round them off) will that cause a problem with my steering? What's the purpose of the extra metal?
